Research activities within the Fuel Cell Systems Research Unit span both fundamental physics and applications of fuel cell systems. Current application domains include the suitability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells for vehicles, and solid oxide fuel cells for home heat and power generation. Specific research issues under investigation are the steady state and dynamic performance of pure fuel cell and hybrid systems, performance enhancement using micro geometry, thermal and water management in fuel cell systems, air-hydrogen supply and humidification systems, thermal and flow analysis in the fuel cell stack, and efficient component manufacturing. Strong industrial ties have also been established with the Hyundai-Kia Motor Company.
